José de Lima
José is a social service worker, and longtime Cambridge resident running to serve as Cambridge’s next Member of Parliament.
José immigrated to Canada from Brazil at the age of eight and has been a proud resident of Cambridge ever since. Shortly after arriving in Canada with his mother, José experienced homelessness after it was necessary for the family to flee from an abusive relationship. During this time, José was introduced to the shelter system which he has since worked to support through his paid employment as the Multi Agency Community Space Manager in Cambridge, coordinating a drop-in program for vulnerable and marginalized residents of Cambridge. This has allowed José to work along the unhoused population in the Cambridge region and assure their rights are respected and their humanity is recognized.
José recognizes that throughout his life, personally, professionally, and politically, the roots of social justice have inspired his actions. He recognizes that it is only by lifting people up that the movement of the New Democratic Party can continue to grow and earn the right to form a government that represents the needs of Canadians. José learned the values of asking for help while growing up in a low-income, single parent, visible minority, household. While his story is not unique, he understands the value that a voice such as his can have when addressing a political system that can often be elite and exclusionary.
His work in the community of Cambridge includes serving as a member of the Idea Exchange Board of Trustees, promoting civil and democratic engagement in the Region of Waterloo, and volunteering in local campaigns. José's passion for social justice and community engagement have led him to volunteer at his local church youth group, local Pride events, and is the passion he brings to work in the field of social services.
As the Federal NDP Candidate in Cambridge, José will continue to spearhead the work of building a more caring and inclusive city.
